One of our most popular styles of men’s underwear is the thong or string, which is second only to the boxer brief (trunk or hipster style) and they account for about 40% of the styles we sell, an interesting fact in itself. However, by far one of the most popular strings we sell is the infamous and timeless classic, the HOM Fredy string and it seems that its success lies in the simplicity of it.

To understand why the Fredy string is so popular it is also important to appreciate what exactly men look for in thongs and of those who buy them on line, which is a significant proportion of our customers, it seems that they like them for a number of reasons.

There are very few other styles of underwear that provides the support and control that is offered by a thong, other than a ‘jock strap’ which is very similar in design and favoured by sportsmen for the very same reason. The simple and minimalist construction of the thong means that the majority of the coverage is provided at the front and hence is where all of the support and control is focused as a result of the cupping effect, which is stabilized by the rearward tension of the thong.

In my opinion the main reason that the HOM Fredy String is so popular and has endured the test of time is for a number of reasons. The problem with the construction of many thongs lies in the fact that many seams all converge and are sewn together in the gusset, which can be uncomfy. This is not the case with the Fredy as it is seam free in this area and uses a very narrow string that goes unnoticed.

You can see in the illustration above how rounded the string on the HOM Fredy String is if you were to cut it in half and look at the cross section compared to a more traditional and flatter thong below, which can tend to become ruffled.

So, this seems to be the reasons why the HOM Fredy String is such a firm favourite and will undoubtedly continue to be around for many more years.

All I would say, is that if you have never tried a thong before, then you should and the Fredy would be a good one to opt for. However, a good piece of advice is go for one size larger than you would normally go for as HOM’s sizing tends to be on the small size and with the Fredy I would even go two sizes. If you are a size 32, then trust me and go for a size 36, because the fit will be perfect.
